Is cyclohexane a carcinogen? ›

Can cyclohexane cause cancer? Cyclohexane has not been assessed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) for its ability to cause cancer in humans. Cyclohexane is not thought to be a cancer causing chemical.

Cyclohexene is a clear, colorless liquid with a sweet odor.

In humans, cyclohexane produces headaches, sleepiness, dizziness, limb weakness, motor changes, and verbal memory impairment. Recent studies in mice have demonstrated behavioral alterations, reactive gliosis, microglial reactivity, and oxidative stress in the brains of cyclohexane-exposed animals.

Cyclohexane is used as a solvent, oil extractant, paint and varnish remover, and in solid fuels.

Aflatoxin B₁ is the most potent hepatocarcinogen known, being about 1,000 times more powerful than butter yellow (p-dimethylaminoazobenzene) in rats.

The oil forms distinct droplets that do not mix with the water because oil and water do not have compatible intermolecular forces. Therefore, the lack of polar functional groups in cyclohexane and cyclohexene prevents them from forming hydrogen bonds with water molecules, leading to their insolubility in water.

After occupational exposure to “commercial hexane”, which contains n-hexane and cyclohexane as well as other impurities, neurotoxic effects were reported. As n-hexane is known to have neurotoxic effects, it is not possible to conclude that cyclohexane was involved nor do the results of animal studies (Section 5.2.

Most cyclohexane goes into the production of intermediates for nylon, which has a variety of common applications such as clothing, tents and carpets as well as thermoplastics. Cyclohexane is also used as a solvent in chemical and industrial processes and recently has been substituted for benzene in many applications.

It is a cyclic alkane that melts at 6℃ and boils at 81℃. It is nearly insoluble in water. Cyclohexane is found naturally to some extent in petroleum but is prepared commercially by catalytic hydrogenation of benzene. It is widely used as a solvent and in making certain compounds used in the preparation of nylon.

Cyclohexanone is not classifiable as to its carcinogenicity to humans (Group 3).

-Toxicity – there are several reasons as to why n-hexane is more hazardous to work with than cyclohexane. The relatively high vapor pressure and known neurotoxicity of n-hexane are two examples.

Extreme overexposure may cause further Central Nervous System depression, unconsciousness and respiratory arrest. Carcinogenicity: Not expected to be carcinogenic.

Cyclohexane has no double bonds between the carbons, its formula is C6H12, while benzene has 3 double bonds with the formula C6H6. Those double bonds are conjugated with the rest of the molecule, which is what we call an "aromatic" cycle.
