SCAM ALERT: Scammers Posing as State or County Tax Regulators

A scambuster alerted us to the attached mailer. It claims to be a “Notice of Warrant and State of Maryland Tax Lien Action” and warns of imminent foreclosure and seizure by the State. This letter is NOT from the Comptroller of Maryland or from Montgomery County Government. It is advertising from a tax law firm based in California (matching the postmark) who vaguely offers either a workout or other service to pay off the liens. The names of consumers receiving this deceptive letter may have been gathered from various court cases found in public records. An online search for “Richard Herts” from the “Office of Lien Filings” shows that this scam has been reported all over the United States. If you get this letter, or one like it, please contact:

Un cazador de estafas nos alertó del correo adjunto. Dice ser “un avisodeautorizacióny una accióndegravamentributario del estado de Maryland” y advierte que la ejecución hipotecaria y la incautación sean inminente. Esta carta no proviene del contralor de Maryland o del gobierno del condado de Montgomery. Es un anuncio de un bufetedeabogadosdeimpuestos basado en California (quecoincidaconelmatasellos) que apenas ofrece una manera o un servicio parapagarlosgravámenes. Quizás los nombres de los consumidores que están recibiendo estas cartas engañosasprovienen de varioscasosjudicialesqueseencuentranenlosregistros públicos.
