While before, romance novels only contained the plot of the romance itself, in the 70s and 80s, the stories began to evolve to include more suspense and mystery, until plots became as important as the romance itself.

A thriving genre of works conventionally referred to as "romance novels" existed in ancient Greece. Other precursors can be found in the literary fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries, including Samuel Richardson's sentimental novel Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded (1740) and the novels of Jane Austen.

By the turn of the millennium, the diversity of themes and romantic subgenres had grown considerably, expanding to include a wider representation of queer stories and characters of diverse ages, ethnicities, and careers.

The first romance was, probably, Samuel Richardson's Pamela – or Virtue Rewarded which was published in 1740. The Pamela of the title is Pamela Andrews, a fifteen-year-old servant, who has to deal with the improper and unwanted advances of her employer.

From the 1960s, it grew into the largest publisher of romance fiction in the world. Based in Toronto since 1969, Harlequin was owned by the Torstar Corporation, the largest newspaper publisher in Canada, from 1981 to 2014. It was then purchased by News Corp and is now a division of HarperCollins.

It had antecedents in many prose works from classical antiquity (the so-called Greek romances), but as a distinctive genre it was developed in the context of the aristocratic courts of such patrons as Eleanor of Aquitaine.

The origin of the romance novel starts around the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries. Samuel Richardson's Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded was one of the first, released in 1740.

Set up the premise and setting of the book and introduce us to your main characters. This wants to happen fairly quickly at the start of your story, so that the reader becomes invested in the story, and in particular in the main character and romantic lead.
